Have you recently had insulation installed in your roof as part the Federal Government rebate scheme? If you answered yes then you should check on the quality of the installation.
Reading through the newspaper I came across a disturbing article. This article was warning me and other householders of the danger that I might be in after having insulation recently installed in my roof. I just read that fire fighters have attended 51 roof fires this year. The fires were caused because insulation was installed incorrectly, either too close or on top of downlights.
After to reading the article you may be thinking what can I do to prevent this from happening to me. Well there is something that you can install in your roof to keep your family safe. The isolite downlight guard is specifically designed to reduce the risk of your recently installed insulation catching fire.
Well 2009 is coming to a close as we sit back and try to remember where the year has gone? Well one thing is for sure that the holiday season is near and that means more people at home, more guests and one busy rush. The Christmas holidays brings families together and is a time to take a break and get ready for the New Year. With more of the family home, kids on school holidays and family dropping past to say hello, it is a time of year when sustainably habits just get forgotten about. Well today I would like to put forward a small list of things you can do this Christmas holidays to help reduce your sustainability footprint.
1. RECYCLE - Christmas is a time of lots of boxes, wrapping and cards. BE SURE TO RECYCLE, REDUCE AND REUSE. A great way is to reduce, not all gifts need to be wrapped, maybe try some ribbon and a bow, or use gift bags which can be reused.
Think of BOXING DAY as RECYCLE DAY, all those boxes should be recycled and not just thrown into landfill. If your recycle bin is full have a chat with a neighbour or wait until the next pickup.
2. SWITCH IT OFF - Remind family and friends to switch off appliances and lighting when they leave a room, It seems to me anyway that every year the walls get a great view of the TV with no one actually watching it, and rooms with lighting on all day as the family moves from one room to another without turning anything off. Just don’t burn the roast thinking about the lights being left on.
3. STANDBY POWER - If you go away to the beach, interstate or overseas, firstly lucky you! But importantly be sure to switch off all your appliances and devices from the wall. Standby power all adds up and no point paying extra while you are away, it also reduces the chances of electrical faults which will ruin your holiday when you hear your house is on fire!
Recent research has estimated that around 10% of electricity consumed in Australian households is attributable to appliances that are in standby mode. That means that around 10% of your electricity bill may be going towards appliances doing nothing.
4. COMPOST - With excess amounts of food being eaten there also creates an excess amount of waste. Try and compost whatever can be and then later you can use the compost on your garden.
The holiday season is also a great time to share and reflect of the year that just past, let family know of the innovative initiatives you have taken to combat global warming and ways that you have made your life more sustainable. It may be a new Water Tank, some Solar PV, Solar Hot Water, Draught Proofing, LED Lighting, New Appliances or reduce Standby Power. Use this time to share your findings and empower others to do the same, point them into the right direction! Enjoy your holidays and hope you have a Green Christmas!
Over the past decade a large number of home owners are choosing to installing down lights as their main source of lighting. Downlights were originally designed as spotlight for wall paintings and decor but are now used to light up hallways, kitchen, bathrooms, lounge rooms and porch lighting.
For one positive that comes with downlights which is the the amount of light they produce there are also plenty of negative. Not only do downlights use large amounts of energy they also pose a huge fire risk for anyone living in their home.
Did you know that a halogen light globe can reach temperatures of around 280-300 degrees celsius? When you consider the heat that a halogen can produce and the flammable materials that are in your roof you can see why halogen downlights can put you and your family at risk.
It has been documented that 75 house fires in NSW have been linked to down lights in the past five years and 57 house fires in Melbourne in the last 18 months. These figures are likely to rise as more new houses are being built with downlights and many people up taking the free insulation program.
A fire in your roof normally goes undetected by smoke alarms and it’s not until the roof crushes down that anyone realises that a fire has started, and then it is too late. The most common reason why these fires occurs is from poorly installed insulation. Too often insulation is placed over or too close to the halogen downlights causing the insulation to catch fire. ‘Blow-in’ or ''bulk-stuff'' insulation can create dust in the attic space that can act as a fuel if it comes into contact with high temperature halogens. Light fittings that are located too close to timber beams or roof space litter are also major factors in roof fires. New rules require insulation of combustible materials to be kept 200mm from light bulbs and their associated transformers. The distance has increased from 50mm. However by increasing the space around downlight globes from the insulation has reduced the effectiveness of the insulation in your roof. Bit of a catch 22.
Great news, there is something that you can do to solve this huge problem and risk. There is a product called Isolite Guard that can help reduce the risk of fire and also help keep your home insulated effectively. Isolite''s unique anchoring system resists forces produced by air movement, people and/or rodents. The downlight guards are manufactured from lightweight high temperature fire resistant materials approved by the Electrical Safety Authorities in Australia.
Isolite Downlight Guard offers vital fire prevention in the ceiling. Isolite Guard stops substantial heating & cooling loss in living areas through exposed down lights. Isolite Guard stops 24 hour entry of insects, dust, allergens and toxins through downlights by sealing them off from the unsealed roof cavity.
On Sunday 2nd of August at 10:00am staff from Long Life Lighting gathered at the Whittlesea planting site to give our community a helping hand for National Tree Day. As we arrived we were greeted by other friendly volunteers and instructions of the day were given. We were informed that today together we would be planing 1,500 trees! We all looked at each other and hoped that more help was on its way. Extra help did arrive and we started to plant each tree one at a time, after a short time we could look back and see the progress. It was great to see so many locals people arrive and support their local community in what we believe is a great program and fun day out.
Be sure to look at your local councils website for updates on other tree planting days but if not keep an eye on the National Tree Day website where you can join in on the fun next year. The day fly's past as you have much fun planting along and everyone chips in and helps. Lunch is also provided at most planting sights including all the tools and equipment.
Young local Epping Business Owner, Ray Milidoni of Long Life Lighting, has just successfully completed the 5 day Home Sustainability Assessor training through ecoMaster.Ray is now qualified and available to our local community to conduct Home Sustainability Assessments in your home.Ray can assess your home for its energy and water efficiency, and expertly suggest highly effective solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and energy bills.
A Home Sustainability Assessment by Ray is the first step to be approved for a Federal Government Low Interest Green Loan of up to $10,000 (interest free for 4 years) to install solar, water saving and energy efficient products in the home. However, householders do not need to commit to applying for a Green Loan in order to have their home assessed.
According to the needs of your home as identified in the Home Sustainability Assessment, the solutions to make your home more sustainable range from simple low or no cost behavioural changes and sustainable appliance purchasing through to retrofitting potential and renewable energy options.
The Australian Government’s Green Loans Scheme was launched on 1st July 2009. The scheme offers 360,000 free assessments to be conducted across Australia over the next five years, 75,000 of which will be granted up to $10,000 in Green Loans.
If you want to be more comfortable in your home over winter and summer whilst making a difference to your homes greenhouse gas emissions, then consider registering for a FREE assessment by calling Long Life Lighting on 03 9038 8737 or visit online at www.FreeHomeAssessments.com.au
A town in NSW called Bundanoon is taking a big step in helping the environment. On the 8th of July 2009 at a community meeting, locals of Bundanoon decided to ban bottled water being sold in their town.
The voluntary ban has been triggered by concerns about the carbon footprint associated with bottling and the transporting of the water. Around 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink containers are manufactured each year and demand is increasing at around 10% per annum. Only 35% of this is then recycled , the rest goes to rubbish polluting rivers, waterways and oceans.
To produce a plastic bottle it requires around 16 times more water than the 600ml in it at the end and also requires about 200ml of oil to make the bottle, see why it needs to be banned?
This move was supported by the NSW Premier Nathan Rees, who has announced an immediate ban on all departments and agencies buying bottled water, including supplies for water coolers.
Is the convenience of drinking bottled water worth it? I would think not!
Plastic bottles take 700 years to being composting. Bottled water not only hurts the environment it also hurts the hip pocket. Financially it just doesn’t make sense, this year Australians will spend half a billion dollars on bottled water, up 10% from last year. The price of one litre of bottled water is up to 2,500 times the cost of tap water, yet people complain they have no money?
Considering the environmental benefits plus the added financial benefits it's a wonder why we even consider buying bottled water. So next time you have the choice between bottled water and tap water just think is it really worth it?
“LOHAS may be the biggest market you’ve never heard of, encompassing [goods and services ranging from] organic food, energy-efficient appliances and solar panels [to] alternative medicine, yoga tapes and eco-tourism.” - New York Times
I have recently come across this new word LOHAS which is being used more and more in our industry.
So what does LOHAS mean? Well LOHAS is an acronym for Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability. The LOHAS market was originally founded in 2000. It was created to explain the growth of organic and natural foods, complimentary medicine and personal development, eco tourism, sustainable home and building products. So what is a LOHAS consumer? LOHAS consumers make choices that reflect their desire for healthier and more sustainable lives.
They are:
Environmentally aware, socially in tune and have a view of the world that takes into account personal, community and planetary outcomes.
Very interested in seeking out and supporting firms that they see as operating in ways which are consistent with their own values and beliefs
Highly conscious of their decisions and believe that making the right choice can contribute to larger environmental and social outcomes
Found in all walks of life and reflect a diversity of backgrounds and defy demographics stereotypes of income, education, age or location
In September 2007 the Living LOHAS report estimated that the LOHAS market segment in Australia was worth $12 Billion. This market segment is made up of many markets including Food & Nutrition, Buildings & Energy, Transport & Leisure, Mind & Body and Home Life. From this report an annual growth rate of +20% is expected to continue. The LOHAS market is expected to reach $21 Billion by 2010!
Is Long Life Lighting LOHAS? At Long Life Lighting we consider ourselves a LOHAS company. We have created a number of policies to help achieve a positive impact on our planet. These policies help us minimise waste, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and recycle as much as possible, more information on our environmental policy can be found on our How Green are we? page.
Long Life Lighting has attended the Innovation & Sustainability Business Workshop run by OMG LOHAS and Mobium Group. We have also been part of the Grow Me The Money pilot program and our staff have been trained to be Home Sustainability Assessors. We engage in such activities to ensure that we are well educated and continue to be as Green as we can be.
Are you LOHAS? To be part of LOHAS all you need to do is change the way you think and behave. We all know that it is not that hard to make choices which have a positive effect on our environment. If you choose to be conscious of your spending and buying habits then you too can join the LOHAS movement.
If you are already buying and spending with your environmental impact in mind then you are already part of the LOHAS group, just like us at Long Life Lighting.

So winter is well and truly here, time to pull out those blankets and spend those cold nights at home watching DVD's. Now that the nights are getting colder you may be keeping your heater on for longer and longer, but are you losing heat without even realizing?
The primary reason that you lose heat from your home is air leakage. 15% to 25% of your winter heating is lost through air leakage. Sometimes air leakage is obvious such as draughts under doors or around ill-fitting windows, but others can be less obvious. Put draft stoppers like door snakes or a rolled up towel at the bottom of outside doorways to keep out cold air. Doing something as simple as this will help in reducing your heating bill.
Another simple but effective way to reduce your heating bill and carbon emissions is to only heat the rooms that you are using, this is known as zoning. By only heating the main living areas and closing the doors to unoccupied rooms you are heating your home in the most effective way. I know this sounds obvious but this is really the best way to heat your home.
Check your thermostat! Did you know that by increasing the temperature of your heater by one degree can increase your heating costs by 10%? So by keeping the temperature stat between 18-19 degrees will not only keep your home at a suitable and comfortable temperature but also save you money.
The lack of ceiling insulation is one of the most ineffective ways to keep your home warm. For every $1000 that you spend on heating $350 of that goes straight up through your roof if your ceiling insulation is inadequate or missing. As well as losing heat through your roof you may also be losing heat through your floor, 10% - 20% of your heating can be lost through your floor. Almost all timber floors have no insulation fitted below them. Finding ways to insulate the flooring is well worth it.
If you're in the market for a new heater, consider a gas heater because they are cheaper to run and produce less greenhouse gas emissions than electric heaters, 75% less in fact. Also consider a heater which has a timer and automatic thermostat that turns off and on automatically to maintain the right temperature. This will reduce the chance of overheating your home and wasting money.
So as you sit here all rugged up and warm think about ways you can reduce your carbon emissions and reduce your heating bill at the same time. Remember this, If you're feeling cold, consider warming up with a jumper or a rug instead of turning on the heater.
Well Google is at it again, creating yet another awesome tool and of course it is free to use, when it launches! Last week as I was surfing the internet I came across a very interesting concept. The Google PowerMeter application will allow home owners with Smart Meters to have their power usage sent to their Google PowerMeter application so that it can be measured, Analise and help home owners save!
The great thing about this idea is that once home owners make the switch to LED Lighting, within just hours they will be able to see the savings, at the moment home owners need to wait till the next bill and see the before and after differences. The idea is great as when people can see the benefits right away their engagement with reducing power is increased. People all too often quit as the results are too far away or can not be seen NOW.
The Google PowerMeter application is just in its early days and is only being tested with some Google employers and in the States of course, who knows how long it will be till it comes to Australia. Keep your eyes opened and we will also let you know if any more information comes to hand.
You may have or may have not heard that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has recently announced that the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has now been delayed to commence July 2011. The main reason this has come about is due to the Global Financial Crisis.
How much of an affect will this have on our environment and planet? It has been well documented that we have to do something NOW to slow down the effect of Global warming. The emissions trading scheme would slash greenhouse gas emissions by putting a price on carbon pollution. The scheme proposed by the Government will cut greenhouse gas emissions by between 5 and 25 per cent over 2000 levels by 2020. The Government has committed to a 25 per cent reduction if there is a global agreement in Copenhagen. I understand that Australia is only a small player on the world stage but Australia can use this opportunity to show how serious we are about Global Warming. Now I know that PM Kevin Rudd is trying to cover his own backside by not over committing but it’s time for him to show us what type of leader he is, by committing to a 25% reduction not only will it show leadership qualities but it would also prove to the people of Australia how serious Kevin Rudd is about Global warming.
The scheme will start on July 1, 2011, which is one year later than the Government originally planned. A fixed carbon price phase will apply between the beginning of the scheme and up to June 20, 2012. During that phase, each carbon permit would cost $10 a tonne.Originally the expected price of a carbon permit was going to cost around $20. By lowering the price of the carbon permit the Rudd Government is making it clear to these big polluting companies that he is not as serious as he made out to be when he first mentioned the Emissions Trading Scheme. There is increased compensation to big business with some companies receiving 95 per cent of their carbon permits for free. That’s right 95% of permits will be free to some companies, the companies that will most likely receive these free permits will be some of the biggest polluting companies in Australia. How is this going to help the effect of Global Warming?
Now I know that it is better to do something small than do nothing at all but in this case I think that it is time that Government should take some action rather than winning votes for the next election. If the opposition Government does come into to power next election then I hope that they go ahead with a better solution to global warming but in saying that we all know what politician’s are like, they will get into government and then do a back flip on the things they promised.
Long Life Lighting is proud to be an advocate of the LED Industry in Australia, to assist us to better understand our customers we conduct an annual survey. Long Life Lighting has run this survey for the last two years. Now that we have two years of results it has enabled us to compare the differences between the 2008 and 2009 surveys.
This year we have decided to compile the 2009 results into a report and release it to the public. The results have given us an insight to what people think and know about the LED industry and we hope it also helps you understand our findings.
97% of the participants knew about LED Lighting, leaving only 3% not knowing but how much do the 97% really know about LED lighting?
At Long Life Lighting we are continually trying to improve our website so it can become a main resource for visitors wanting to know anything related to LED lighting. We also like to educate visitors in ways of becoming more “Green” and running a sustainable household. Be assured that whenever we come across any information we think our visitors may find useful we will publish it to our website so you can keep up to date with the rapid improvements of the LED lighting industry.
Is LED the most efficient lighting?
People tend to believe that this is the case, and they are correct! Over 85% of the participants in the survey believe that LED is the most efficient type of lighting. CFL Lighting was followed after LED with 10% and a small 4% of participants believed Incandescent lighting is the most efficient lighting.
Compared to Incandescent lighting which is being banded in Australia and other parts of the word LED lighting can reduce the energy consumed by 90%.
LED lighting will one day be the lighting choice of the future; it has too many advantages over other lighting types. You will read more about this in the next section
Will LED lighting be the lighting choice of the future?
A staggering 94% of the people we surveyed did agree that LED lighting will be the lighting choice of the future. With its long life span, low energy usage and many other advantages there is no reason why LED lighting will not take over lighting our Earth.
We are all aware of Global warming but how much do we care?
Every participant is aware of global warming; 69% of participants have a fairly high to very high concern about Global warming and the affect on our planet. 20% have a moderate concern and a small 11% of people saying that Global warming is of very low to fairy low concern.
So people are aware that we have to do more to stop or slow down the process of global warming, and most people are highly concerned, the more people that do their little bit will mean that we will all benefit from a more sustainable future.
Halogen Downlights are putting you and your family at risk!!! Did you know that halogen lights run at a temperature of over 200º Celsius?
We found that 71% of participants know about the danger which halogen downlights can have to a home, however in saying this, it still leaves 29% which are unaware of the risk that halogen lighting can have. When it comes to safety no one can afford not to be aware. At Long Life Lighting one of our aims is to warn people of the dangers of halogen lighting.
To be safe always follow the building standards, when installing insulation it must not be within 300mm of the halogen down light. When using LED lighting the building codes must still be followed but LED down light only run at a temperature of about 60-65 º C meaning that the risk of a fire starting is significantly low.
What you had to say
A large number of our participants feel that the price for LEDs is too expensive. We know that LED, at this stage, is more expensive to purchase then other lighting types like Halogen and CFLs. However the advantage that LED has over other forms of lighting is that LED uses only little energy meaning less money spent on electricity cost. Pay back periods for LEDs is almost always within the one to two year mark, meaning that the investment will pay its self off.
Comments
“Price was initially an issue but a friend convinced me and now I am slowly replacing my lights to LEDs “
“Little more expensive, but longer lasting, so in the long run works out cheaper”
“I like it. The output is good, the quality seems fine, and although more expensive to purchase, doesn't appear to be more expensive in the long run”
“Led lighting is very useful and with a low voltage needing,, very energy efficient for me, I power mine through a solar panel on the roof.”
“A little dearer, Very Very good quality and output. Instant on and off (no warm up) No heat”
“I think your company is great and with out companies like your one people would not no any think about the options”
Are you renting?
Even if you are renting you can still make the switch to LED. Our past experience shows that Landlords are willing to help in part payment or even in some cases full payment to help do their little bit for the environment.
The governments Green Loan scheme is one not to be missed, there is a lot of info on their web site but it will most likely get you all confused. In simple terms households (and tenants at this stage) will be able to apply for a zero or very low interest loan of up to $10,000 to invest in making your home more sustainable. Before a homeowner can be given a loan the property needs to be assessed to give the household a better understanding on ways they can reduce their carbon foot print. The assessment is FREE of change to the household. It is not often these days we get things for free.
During the last 3 days of last week (25th – 27th of March 2009) I attended the first part of a 5 day training course held by a great team of trainers at ecoMaster. The first 3 days is the starting ground for me to become an accredited Home Sustainability Assessors, it covers all the fundamental information needed to understand how households can improve their carbon footprint. The second part of the training is 2 more days where training in using the software will be taught.
The training was presented in a very high standard and everyone in the class benefited form the information being taught, some things are so simple to reducing energy and water usage but it makes even more sense when it was explained in a little more detail. As an assessor this is going to be my role, to educate households of the many simple ways they can change something to make a positive difference. The Loan application is optional after having the assessment, so this is a great way to get a snap shot of how good or bad your home is and start making changes sooner rather than later.
Since the training I have been making changes all around the office and my home, I have measured insulation thickness, water flows and temperatures and looking at ways to draught proof everywhere.
The scheme has yet to launch officially, however is in its final stages and likely to launch mid 2009 Long Life Lighting is inviting anyone who is interested to express your interest now so that we can keep you updated and book your home for an assessment as soon as the scheme is launched.
Below is a detailed explanation of how the system will work for those interested, it has been taken from the Australian Government's Green Loans Program website.
How will it work?
Firstly, households looking to save energy and water will have access to a qualified household sustainability assessor to investigate their current energy and water use. Households who participate in a household sustainability assessment will be provided with a tailored report on the best water and energy saving changes they can make to their property as well as practical information to help get them started.
Secondly, the program will help households who chose to undertake actions suggested by the assessment with a Green Loan subsidy to significantly reduce the cost of loans of up to $10,000. The loans will be made available through partnering financial institutions. Details on the terms of loans will be available in 2009.
This innovative program will help an estimated 200,000 Australian households to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by around 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year by 2020. In addition, the program will encourage an estimated $2 billion in green inspired investment for households - directly benefiting the small business sector.
The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts is finalising the program guidelines which will set out eligibility criteria and administrative arrangements. The guidelines will be released early in 2009 with the first assessments and loans expected to be available in mid 2009.
After talking with many people and reading over many surveys I understand that people are still a little reluctant to switch over to LED. The main reason is because of the price and how new they are in the market. We understand the reluctance of these people, that’s why we added a product to our range that will satisfy this market.
With the banning of the incandescent globe getting closer and closer it was time for manufactures to come up with a product that would save energy and give off enough light at the same time. What they did come up with is the energy saving halogen. This new type of halogen uses 30 per cent less energy while still giving off the same amount of light and lasts twice as long.
This globe has great potential to be a stop gap until the LED becomes suitable for all applications.
When I sat down at my desk this morning I had a quick glance at my calendar and could not believe how far into the year we are already. This gave me time to reflect on the past 12 months I have spent at Long Life Lighting.
The thing that has really impressed me about the industry we are in is the technology. We have had many improvements in the last 12 months and I can not wait to see what products we will havein the next 12 months. In mid march we will be receiving some more stock which includes new stock and improved models of older stock. We will be releasing this products to the public around the end of March. This will give our customers more choice to save energy and money.
Its not only the stock that has changed since I have joined Long Life Lighting, we have also moved from a home based business to an office in Epping. Less then 12 months ago we were running out of garage in Reservoir, Long Life Lighting has came a long way since then. Currently based in a factory in Epping we are excited about expanding our business further in the future.
The biggest change you may have notice to Long Life Lighting is our website. A lot of work has gone into the development of this new and improved website (mainly by Ray). The main reason to change our website was because of you. At Long Life Lighting we didn’t want to be known as just another lighting shop. We wanted to be here to inform as many people as we can about how they can help sustain this beautiful environment that we live in.Our aim is to provide up to date and relevant information that you may find useful. This new website isn’t all about us! We want you to play your part as well. We want your thoughts, ideas, information and suggestions to become a part of this site.
The energy efficiency of a home is heading to be the next big thing in real estate, along with location and number of bed rooms.
So no matter where your home is located in the near future a poor energy rating would mean that the value of your home would diminish. Energy ratings would become mandatory for all dwellings in the near future.
Real Estate Institute of Victoria Neil Laws said it was a natural progression that vendors’ section 32 statements would include an energy rating for dwellings, as happened interstate. Where other states are already facing home price drops due to poor energy efficiency, Victoria is soon to follow.
Futurologist Ray Hammond said that the amount of energy a property could produce and return to the power grid would become one of its selling features.
People will start to be interested in environmental issues such as insulation, power usage, heating and cooling cost and carbon foot print.
LED Lighting will become the core solution to lighting homes now and in the future, with lighting contribution to approximately 30% of energy cost in homes, lights is the first step to increasing the value of your home.
So when you really think about it, is it really about location, location, location? don’t think so.
Contact Us or browse our online LED shop today to see how you can future proof your home with the latest LED Technology now!
